How Do I Clean an Essential Oil Diffuser?
The refreshing and calming scents of On Guard, Peppermint, or Lemon from your diffuser are what help you get through the day. But, if your diffuser is not clean, you may notice hints of other scents that are lingering inside the diffuser. To keep your diffuser operating at optimum performance, a little maintenance is needed.
Cleaning your diffuser ensures that you are removing essential oil residue so you get the benefit of the oil that you are currently diffusing. The folks at doTERRA say in their blog that the best way to extend the useful life of a diffuser is to make sure that it is deep cleaned at least once per month.
Step 1: Fill the water reservoir halfway with clean water, then add a tablespoon of white vinegar.
White vinegar is a natural cleaner that has many uses. Its acidic nature makes it perfect for removing mineral deposits left behind from water. This is why Keurig recommends using straight white vinegar to remove water scales from inside its single brew coffee makers.
Step 2: Run the diffuser for at least five (5) minutes. Running the diffuser allows the vinegar to permeate the interior of the diffuser.
Step 3: Moisten a cotton swab with white vinegar to clean the interior parts of the diffuser. A cotton swab allows you to get into the edges and corners of the diffuser, where your hand can’t fit.
Step 4: Rinse the interior of the diffuser with clean water. Allow remaining water to air dry. If you prefer, you can use a lint free cloth, such as a microfiber towel, to dry the interior of your diffuser. Avoid terry cloth or other material that may leave fibers behind. The less impurities in your diffuser, the better it will work.
Regular cleaning of your diffuser not only improves its useful life, but guarantees that you will have a pure diffusing of your oil of choice. While mixing oils together is encouraged to get multiple benefits, there are times when you really want the scent of just lemon without a lingering hint of On Guard.
